About our Homestead

The Homestead

The cottage and cattle stud are located on a property known as "Lone-Hand". When we purchased the property in 1999 it had been owned by the Leishman family of Creswick for over 100 years. We live in the original 100 year old timber homestead with its wide verandahs, generous sized bedrooms and original pressed metal ceilings.

The property has seen many uses over the years, including gold mining, potato growing, Clydesdale and race horse breeding, grass and seed growing, sheep grazing (as is obvious by shearing shed and yards in front of the cottage) and a t-shirt/tourist goods factory when we purchased it. The factory is now our farm shed and the office building is now Heatherington Cottage which has been re-located into its current position and obviously re-designed!

We are fortunate to be able to reap the rewards of early plantings of magnificent pine trees which now shield the house. We are endeavouring to maintain and develop the garden with its old fruit trees, herb garden, croquet lawn and rose bushes. Beyond the homestead we have a cricket oval and pavilion, courtesy of the previous owners!

"Lone-Hand", as a property, has changed its boundaries many times from originally being the homestead on the Lone-Hand gold mine property. The remains of the mine are now located on the property at the back of ours.
